JJ and Elijah retrieved the bags, unloaded the groceries, and then returned to the car. He fished underneath the passenger seat for a minute before his hand landed on the gun. After he removed the gun, he stuffed it into his waistband and then grabbed his bike from the porch.

JJ shook her head.

“What?” Elijah asked.

“Nothing. I have said all that I’m going to say,” JJ said, walking toward the house.

“Where are you going?”

“I’m going to help auntie put away the groceries.”

“Tell her I rode my bike to the basketball court.”

JJ looked at him with the side-eye. “Don’t put any more holes in the basketball goal, please.”

“You got jokes.”

“Everyone knows you’re the worst basketball player that ever lived. I’ll just tell her that you were going to the Candy Lady’s house.”

“Good idea, but I’ve gotten better at basketball.”

“Yeah, right.”
